“An Overview of Shainin Methods ”

Shainin Methods also knows as Statistical Engineering and Shainin Systems™ is a problem-solving approach championed by Dorian Shainin (former VP and Exec Sec of ASQ in the 1950’s and 1970’s and first person to win all 4 top ASQ medals).

Shainin Methods uses a deductive reasoning approach (unlike Six Sigma that uses an inductive approach). It is structured as a more direct and much simpler approach to identifying issue root causes and their solutions.

It is a standardized problem-solving approach with its main principles being:

  • to use convergent techniques to quickly narrow your focus
  • to use simple comparison tools to quickly identify root causes
  • to not rely on the use of heavy statistical software and training
  • to allow its use by employees at all levels, including the front line
  • to need relatively smaller sample sizes (applicable to more firms)

Shainin Methods has been used heavily within the automotive and aircraft industry but is applicable everywhere. Although it is older than Six Sigma, it is lesser known due to Shainin Red X® Holding, LLC’s use of highly stringent non-disclosure agreements restricting its dissemination within and outside of companies.

“Field Failure Analysis and Root Cause Pattern Diagrams”

Bob will also present key elements of his 2012 ASQ World Conference Presentation “Field Failure Analysis and Root Cause Pattern Diagrams” (aka Lloyd Diagrams). The workshop will discuss the strength and weaknesses of various quality metrics and how they led to the development of Bob’s graphical data mining technique that is based on Shainin principles.

Robert Lloyd Bio

Bob is a Stanford trained innovator and change agent, passionate about successfully deploying and leading strategic initiatives in customer centered design, operational excellence and Agile development across consumer products, retail, telecom, medical devices, financial services and non-profits on an international basis with an impact of over $2 billion.

At Motorola, Bob was trained in Shainin Methods directly by Dorian Shainin and Keki Bhote. Shainin Methods were used by Motorola to improve product reliability by 6X to break the Japanese trade barrier in electronics. Continued efforts, drove reliability to 1M hrs MTBF, allowing Motorola to beat all 5 Japanese competitors in cost, quality, performance and on-time delivery to become the largest seller of radios in Japan.

As Director of Product Reliability at Motorola, Bob used Shainin DOE methods to design a MEOST 1-Week Accelerated Life Test that reduced product time-to-market by over 2.5 months, identified 3X more correlated field issues, eliminated costly ECNs and slashed field failures and warranty costs by more than half. This test was institutionalized across Motorola for an impact exceeding $1 billion.

Bob’s 2012 ASQ World Conference presentation “Field Failure Analysis & Root Cause Pattern Diagrams” was related to the graphical data mining technique he used at Johnson & Johnson and Ocwen Financial that applied the Shainin practice of looking for data patterns where none should exist. lcgadvantage.com/data-mining.html

Because Bob was directly trained by Dorian Shainin and Keki Bhote at Motorola, he never signed any non-disclosure agreements, making him one of only a handful of independent instructors able to conduct training without the requirement of imposing highly stringent NDA restrictions on his students.
