Chair's Corner

The Board Communicates
QUALITY and the ECONOMY

As mentioned in the previous newsletters, each month a board officer or committee chair will provide a topic of interest to the members of the section. This month it is my turn...

I am Jerome Lofton and I am currently the Chair-Elect for the section.

Given the current global turmoil regarding the economy, I chose this as my topic, not from a perspective of "profound knowledge", but as a subject to probe its inner workings; "our" impact on it; and to provoke thought... To that end, I have titled my topic "QUALITY  and the ECONOMY".

Wikipedia defines the economy as follows: "An economy is the realized social system of production, exchange, distribution, and consumption of goods and services of a country or other area. A given economy is the end result of a process that involves its technological evolution, civilization's history and social organization, as well as its geography, resource endowment, and ecology, among other factors. These factors give context, content, and set the conditions and parameters in which an economy functions." (1)

How do we, as quality professionals, ASQ members and US industry participants, impact this?

The original property of the Atlanta Paper Co. began in the early 1900's. It produced paper products ranging from egg cartons to shirt collar supports. During WWII, one of the owners sons observed the popular drink Coca Cola and thought it would be a good idea to provide multiple packaging for this product.

The initial packaging was created and patented to carry returnable bottles back to the store for deposits. The business began to grow. Mead was the supplier of paperboard to the Atlanta Paper Co. and developed a water resistant board. In the late fifties, Mead purchased the Atlanta Paper Co. and Mead Packaging began. Our early product line also included frozen foods, food products and small boxes for batteries, etc.

We began producing beverage cartons in the early 1960's. In 1969, the plant had a major fire which temporarily halted production. When operations resumed, the plants' major focus of production switched from soft drink to beer manufacturing.

The Atlanta plant began supplying Anheuser-Busch with cartons for their 12 and 18 can pack beer products as well as the Targeteer 12/12 glass. In 2002, we went inline with the Targeteer carton, and currently provide 100% of the Targeteer volume with the addition of tape in the handle.

In 2004, we installed an inline Central Impression Flexo Press to supply CCE with the Fridgemaster.  In 2006, we went inline on the 12/12 can pack.  We achieved Anheuser-Busch Certified Status in 2006.
